The Catawba River at sunset is the location for this date offered by the U.S. National Whitewater Center. There will be no rushing rivers on this outing. Flat-water kayaking is a fairly mild exercise. Check in at the kayak center at 6 p.m. However, arrive early to look around at this outdoor sports complex. From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., enjoy paddling along the river, led by guides. Sit down for dinner around a lit campfire from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. A representative from an area brewery will introduce some of the Carolinas’ best brews. Wear comfortable clothes for this excursion and bring a change of clothes. There is a bit of walking on trails, so wear sturdy shoes.

Bikers With Boxes is a charity ride to the Billy Graham Library. It benefits Operation Christmas Child. Make it a day and plan a scenic route to the library during a beautiful fall day. This event is scheduled for October 19th. Stop for a meal on the road or picnic on the way, but don’t forget the boxes. Fill a Christmas paper-wrapped box with goodies for either a girl or boy. The boxes are shipped to needy children all over the world. While at the library, take the Journey of Faith tour, visit the Graham Family Homeplace or grab a sandwich and soda at the Graham Brothers Dairy Bar. This would be a great father/daughter date.

Maroon 5 is a pop rock band selling out concert dates worldwide, Clarkson was the “American Idol” winner for 2002 and Lucca is a diverse musician playing a variety of styles. Buy lawn seats and sit under the stars or pay more for a seat under the roof. Drinks and food are offered at this venue and there is free parking. The concert is scheduled for September 11th, a perfect time of year for outdoor entertainment.

Blythe Landing Park is on the banks of Lake Norman and Charlotte’s Lake Norman is beautiful in the fall. The park includes 26 acres of beach (no swimming), walking trails, picnic areas, volleyball courts and a gazebo. After a drive around the lake, stop at Armin’s Sunshine Cafe for a dockside meal. It closes for the season on October 31st. The cafe offers gourmet sandwiches of turkey, roast beef, ham and BBQ. There are garden salads and chef salads as well. Try the brownies or apple crunch for dessert. You can also call ahead to have the meal packed for a picnic.
